“Amish Gold Slicer” was given to me by a fellow Floridian, who grew it successfully in the eastern Florida Panhandle. I was also able to grow it in the western panhandle. Gorgeous salad spheres of sunny gold…and in my notes I wrote simply, “WOW,” and “yellow epidermis.” I have several key words to describe flavor as I take my notes on dozens of varieties. So many are very tasty or even delicious. But I would say that fewer than 10 varieties each season earn a “WOW!” rating. In my notes, that indicates a strong sugar and acid flavor that punches the tongue, yet is a smooth balance when swallowed, without any musky or odd aftertaste. Anyway, Amish Gold Slicer is officially one of my “WOW!” varieties. In my spring 2019 crop, the size of the fruits were significantly larger than in my previous season. The shape was the same, but the fruit size ranged from 8 to 12 ounces each. Same great flavor.
