“Amish Gold Slicer” was given to me by a fellow Floridian, who grew it successfully in the eastern Florida Panhandle. I was also able to grow it in the western panhandle. Gorgeous salad spheres of sunny gold…and in my notes I wrote simply, “WOW,” and “yellow epidermis.” I have several key words to describe flavor as I take my notes on dozens of varieties. So many are very tasty or even delicious. But I would say that fewer than 10 varieties each season earn a “WOW!” rating. In my notes, that indicates a strong sugar and acid flavor that punches the tongue, yet is a smooth balance when swallowed, without any musky or odd aftertaste. Anyway, Amish Gold Slicer is one of my “WOW!” varieties of this season.
