“Ljubov Dlan” or “Ljubo’s Palm,” is named for a gentleman in Serbia, who bred this pepper (Ljubo), and the fact that it was as large as his hand. It is indeed a very large, thick-walled, sweet pepper.
One of my gardening friends from “across the pond” has described Ljubov Dlan: “The main use of this pepper is for grilling and processing into AJVAR, a pepper delicacy common in my part of the world, basically it is baked pepper and eggplant mixed with other veggies and vinegar and other stuff then turned into rough paste that is used mainly with grilled meat on the side (you use gravy, we use ajvar).”
“The pepper grills nicely on both sides being flat and when the skins turn black, they rub off easily. That way you get the smoky flavor and the sweetness of the pepper combined. It is also used for ‘pickling’, the whole roasted peeled peppers are put in a jar and the jars get filled with hot vinegar (with some sugar, salt and spices + cloves of garlic) and left to ‘rest’ for a while before use. Now, that is yummy.”
My plant was quite tall, maybe 4 feet, and the peppers were impressively large. I have to agree with everything my friend described about Ljubov Dlan…especially the part about “yummy.”
