“Mayo’s Delight” led me to the wrong conclusion. Here I was thinking that the word “mayo” was meant for mayonnaise, as in “this is a great tomato for a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich (which everyone knows has mayo on it.” But I was incorrect! According to my favorite tomato database, the seeds for this variety were given anonymously to a lady named Mayo Underwood…and the variety was distributed from there. I am uncertain at which point the name was given.
The fruits are really wonderful, if you like sweet, meaty slab o’ maters, as I do. Mayo’s Delight is like a great big red valentine, sometimes more pointed heart and sometimes more oblate if you are in the south US…more pointed heart if you are in the upper north US. But alas and alack for me, seeds are few in this meaty oxheart, AND it is a rather late variety…two things that make it difficult to amass a decent offering of seeds. I was able to set it out earlier this year with protection and finally got a decent amount of seed stock.
