“Randy’s Cherry Bomb” is a very special tomato. The tomato itself is a large red cherry with excellent flavor, the combination of sweet and tangy that I love. Randy’s Cherry Bomb was bred and selected by the late Randy Sine, a man who epitomized the word “gentleman.” Randy was a skilled gardener and tomato breeder, a former civilian contractor for the U.S. Coast Guard, a musician, and a teacher in all that he did. Randy was a member of our gardening forum. Every single time that he logged into the forum, he would check on me. “Is today a good kidney day?” he would ask. “Are you remembering to drink lots of water?” He never forgot. During his lifetime, Randy created a number of excellent tomato varieties and, I believe, also pepper. He gave lectures that helped many others to grow food. And he grew 15 foot tall tomatoes. The photo attached shows Randy in a way that I will always remember, standing atop a very tall ladder and surrounded by these tremendous tomato plants. Randy wrote, “And of course what gardening season of mine would be complete without some ladder pictures of my tomato plants. 🙂 Having said that may have been the last year I do it. They got really out of control and I had to reinforce the cages with long pieces of rebar and conduit. BTW, my hands are touching the tops of the plants and they are roughly 12′ in the photo. Before it was all said and done they topped out at a little over 15′.”
Randy’s Cherry Bomb is one variety that he grew, and selected several from the line to compare. This version has thinner skin, which I like, because it is not tough to chew. The thin skin does crack a bit if you live in an area like I do, where you can get 2 inches of rain in an hour and 8 inches of rain in one day. So when you grow this yummy red cherry, be as consistent as you can with the watering to avoid cracking. NOTE: One packet per order please, until I can build my stock.
