“Sugar Cherry” is a delicious little jewel currant-type with a strong, sweet flavor. It is Solanum pimpinellifolium (why does my mind always think of “pimpinellifolium” as pumpernickel…just the strange ways my mind works I guess), which does make it a true currant. As such, it appears to be resistant to late blight, which is always a plus in my climate. My original seeds came from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, from whom I have purchased a number of “new to me” varieties in the past years. The neat thing about currant types is that they don’t HAVE to be a huge bush in the ground. You can actually grow these varieties in a hanging basket or cascading pot. The smaller pot size will help to control the plant size, and you can always prune further if you are one of those folks who like to prune tomato plants. I feel that Hawaiian Cherry is a little sweeter; however, the flavor of Sugar Cherry is right up there with the best red currants.
