“Sugarbear,” a Bunny Hop Seeds original creation, is a balcony dwarf that MIGHT be able to be grown as a micro-dwarf. I am still undecided about the feasibility of it. I have grown her in a 1 gal nursery pot as a micro, and she did bear fruit while topping at about 14 to 16” tall; however, the fruit size and productivity were quite limited compared to when grown in a large pot. And truly, 14 to 16” tall is a bit big to fit on shelves with growlights unless the shelves and the lights are adjustable in height.
When grown in a large pot or growbag, Sugarbear reaches 2.5 to 3 ft tall and blooms so profusely that it almost looks like a multiflora. It is not a multiflora though, as neither parent plant was mfl. Sugarbear simply puts out lots of blooms for its size.
The fruits are 2.3 to 3 ounces, and shaped like small oblate beefsteaks with scalloped tops. Later in the season as our daylight hours changed, the late fruit sets made rather heart-shaped fruits the same size as the oblates (and on the same plants…that is normal for my latitude in the early spring to summer grow period).
The epidermis is yellow, and the flesh is at first almost white. When fully ripened in the heat, the flesh is yellow with a little red blush at the blossom end. The texture is excellent, being plump and turgid, neither crunchy nor mealy, with plenty of juice. The flavor is sweet and balanced; however, in a heavy rain ripening period it can be milder (washed out after breaker).
In case you are wondering about the name, “Sugarbear” is a term of endearment that my lovely mama always called me.
