“Texwine” is a heat tolerant variety by Bill Jeffers of Indiana. It is a sister line to Dixiewine, McMurray #10, and Homeboy. Mr. Jeffers stated that Texwine is segregate of the original Brandywine x Neves Azorean Red cross made in 2006. “Susan Anderson of Elgin, Texas, selected this line, and grew it out in Texas heat, returning seeds to me here in Southwestern Indiana where they sustained healthy, regular leaf vines and good production through our unusually hot and dry summer of 2012.”
Texwine has excellent strong tomato flavor, able to stand up to cooking and sandwiches as well as salads. In my growing experiences with this variety, I believe that it tolerates dry heat better than it tolerates high humidity with heat, in regard to fruit productivity.
NOTE: Developing line. Some growers have reported finding potato leaf and regular leaf seedlings. The potato leaf seedlings should not be grown or continued under the name “Texwine.” Mr. Jeffers has stated that only regular leaf plants will be identified as “Texwine” to be true to type. So far my plants have always been regular leaf.
