“Spectrum’s Surpriz” sprung from a sharing of unstable seeds from the “Surpriz” variety. It was discovered in 2013 and grown to stability by two members of the Doc and Katie’s Garden Xanadu (mostly) tomato forum. Laura-in-FL grew hers in Florida, and Tomike grew his in Quebec, Canada. It is hard for me to think of two more dissimilar climates, yet Spectrum’s Surpriz thrived in both locations. This is a purple-fleshed medium beefsteak with green stripes and a dusting of anthocyanin on top (when exposed to the sun). I have found a bit of variation in shape (more round than oblate) and size (small versus medium beefsteak) on the same plant, with the smaller rounder fruits coming at the end of my season when the plants are exhausted. “Flavor is a true tomato flavor with both sweet and tangy notes, but it leans a little toward sweet.” This variety has been grown since 2013 and does appear to be stable. Please note that these are not my photos. They are photos taken by the growers and used with their permission.
