“King Aramis” is a determinate dwarf variety with a shadowy past. Well, by “shadowy” I just mean that there have been several theories put forward as possible originations of a dwarf plant showing up in a batch of indeterminate, non-dwarf seedlings. King Aramis was first known as DGOC, or Dwarf Grandma Oliver’s Chocolate. Grandma Oliver’s Chocolate is an indeterminate variety that came from a cross developed by Marianna’s Heirloom Seeds from Grandma Oliver’s Green and a black tomato, stabilized to F5 before releasing to the public. Seeds were shared as well. At some point, a dwarf plant was found among Grandmother Oliver’s Chocolate seedlings. Fruits produced were said to be a “reddish” chocolate that in later generations became fully chocolate (chlorophyll-retained red flesh with yellow epidermis). This dwarf was grown further and in time the name was changed to King Aramis.
I was not really expecting this tomato to be a “Ellie’s Wow List” variety. I mean, it is a chocolate beefsteak dwarf, and the 4 to 7 oz fruits were not really that pretty. When I tasted it, however, I actually did say, “WOW!” The taste is sweet and complex with acid and the other deep flavors you find in the red flesh/chlorophyll-retained fruits. The texture of the flesh was succulent and perfect, not too firm and not too soft. I suppose the fruits were not very pretty because the stinkbugs (who always seem to know which varieties have that strong sugar/acid balance) had left their marks. I just had one plant, so I do not have many seeds this season…I have to save most of them for my planting reserve stock. My plant grew from three seeds I was sent in 2013…I have no more of the original seeds. There will be more plants in the coming season, however. NOTE: One packet per order please.
