“Peachy Keen” is an original creation by Bunny Hop Seeds. It is a little gem I am carrying forward from a cross I made in the fall of 2014. The maternal parent was Green Mustang, a nice green when ripe (GWR) beefsteak, and the paternal parent was ATVO 0102, a prolific high beta-carotene small slicer from South Africa, resistant to bacterial wilt (BW), and having heat set and humidity and nematode tolerance. My goal has been to widen the color, flavor, and nutrition horizon of varieties that can be grown in the ground in the southeast US.
I love the shape of Peachy Keen…there is a little point to the end so that they look like little peaches. The flavor also reminds me of a peach (not that it tastes of peaches, it doesn’t) in that it is sweet and strongly acid at the same time.
The fruits are produced in trusses, and the color of the inner flesh shows a pinkish-orange/red color that is characteristic of beta carotene content. The plant itself is interesting, taking after the ATVO 0102 parent in being one of those varieties that does not take on purple in the leaf veins etc. when the seedlings are cold and/or malnourished. As I have stated in the listing for Mica Red, I am not sure if this indicates the anthocyaninless gene or the anthocyanin absent gene, or neither one of those, but it does make for interesting seedling color in cool weather (bright yellow-green) and pretty green plants in good conditions.
I highly recommend Peachy Keen to anyone who struggles to grow heirloom tomatoes in a hot, humid climate and who loves intensely flavored cocktail-sized tomatoes that are produced abundantly on a small plant.
I have taken these photos at various stages of ripeness to show the colors from the blushing cheek all the way to the rich orange-red of the fully ripe fruit.
