  • “Chaotic Jester” is one of the segregants I found when I grew Mojo Pepper’s “Purple Flower Bubble Gum.” I believe that the original cross was released very early, at F1 or F2. The last time I looked on their website the cross was no longer pictured. I originally intended to just call it “Jester;” however, there is a hybrid squash and a lettuce both called Jester, so I didn’t want there to be confusion. Chaotic Jester is a striking plant, with green leaves and dark purple stems. The immature fruits are deep purple and the mature fruits are a rich banana custard color that eventually ripens to candy apple red. I have been growing this for some time, selecting for the green leaves with purple-black stems and leaf veins. In my test this fall, I had none with purple leaves and stems out of 50 seedlings; however, it is entirely possible that one may still show up here or there. For this reason, I am marking Chaotic Jester as a developing variety. I prefer the green leaves because they are much more striking with the contrast of the purple-black stems and leaf veins. The fruits are shaped and textured like 7-pot types, crinkly thin-skinned little lanterns with wipe-burning-tongue-on-the-carpet-cry-to-yo-mamma type heat. Although I have listed it here as a Capsicum chinense, the other parent may be other than chinense.
