“Spunky Bird” is an original creation by Bunny Hop Seeds. Let me just say that I never thought I would love a plain, open-pollinated, red tomato so much. Spunky Bird is an early balcony-sized dwarf (in a very large pot grows to 20″ tall in FULL SUN) that produces scarlet red large cherry to cocktail-sized fruits, 1 to 2oz. Spunky Bird can be grown as a micro-dwarf in a smaller pot (no more than 1-gallon) but the productivity will be less. The fruits are not sugar sweet, but they have an excellent balanced tomatoey flavor that will not hide in your salad or sandwich. Why am I so impressed with Spunky Bird? Well, let me tell you that it did not get early blight or late blight or any of the diseases that neighboring plants did. I cannot say that it has specific disease resistance; however, it stayed green, vigorous, and productive when 95% of my other tomato plants had died in June as normal. There is considerable heat/humidity tolerance as well, because it was still producing fruits in AUGUST. The seeds in those latest fruits were not viable, but the flavor of the fruits was still great. Spunky Bird is the result of a cross I made of Aztek (large micro) x [Green Mustang (GWR beefsteak) x ATVO 0102 (beta carotene with disease resistance and heat/humidity tolerance)]. Spunky Bird has been red/cocktail/2ft tall from F2 through now at F5. These F6 seeds should continue the same phenotype I have been seeing each previous generation.
Finally, how did I come up with the name? I had a favorite parakeet when I was a child, who was quite obstreperous, spunky, and lived up to his name, which was Sparky. This variety exhibits the same spunk. I highly recommend Spunky Bird to those who live in hot/humid climates…but also to anyone who wants to grow a very vigorous, productive, 2ft tall dwarf with tomatoey red cocktails.
NOTE: In this batch there are tiny seeds (probably non-viable) mixed with the big seeds and spending hours sorting them out is not something I can do now. So I have increased the number of seeds to greater than 40, and will sell these mixed seed size packets at a discount. You should still have over 15 big good seeds in each packet.
